Our Most Frequently Asked Questions about Kingaroy Solar

We’ve answered our most frequently asked questions about solar below.
If you have a question that we haven’t answered, our team of solar technicians are ready to assist with your queries.

On-grid solar is a type of solar energy system that is connected to the main power grid.

One of the greatest benefits is that on-grid solar provides you with a free energy source throughout the day when the sun is shining, without needing to buy electricity from the grid.

Unlike off-grid systems, on-grid systems do not require batteries for storage and can feed excess energy back into the grid, making them ideal for those who don’t want to be independent from their electricity provider.

On-grid solar installations provide an economical and efficient way to utilise renewable sources of energy while still being able to draw on traditional electricity from the grid when needed.

Off-grid solar is a type of solar energy system that is not connected to the power grid.

This allows users to become independent from their utility company, as they can generate and store their own electricity.

Off-grid systems typically utilise batteries for storage of excess electricity, so they are able to use their generated electricity whenever necessary. This makes them ideal for those who want complete control over their energy production and usage.

Off-grid systems may require more maintenance than on-grid systems due to the need to regularly monitor and replace batteries, making them best suited for remote locations with limited access to power.

A hybrid solar system is a combination of on-grid and off-grid systems, where energy is simultaneously sent to the electricity grid for power credits, and stored in batteries for later use. This allows users to have the benefits of both on-grid and off-grid installations by generating their own electricity and having the option to draw from the grid when needed.

Hybrid systems often require specialised equipment and installation processes, so they may not be suitable for all locations.

Our friendly team of solar technicians can guide you as to whether a hybrid solar system is practical for your specific situation.

The four main components of a solar power system are the solar panel array, an inverter, a battery, and wiring to connect all of these components together.

  1. The solar panels collect energy from the sun’s rays and convert it into electricity that can be used in the home.
  2. The inverter then converts the direct current (DC) from the solar panel array into alternating current (AC) for use with standard electrical appliances.
  3. Batteries store any excess generated power for later use.
  4. Mounting System provides a secure solution for attaching solar panels to any surface, including rooftops, building facades, and the ground.

Solar energy works by converting the sun’s light into electrical energy through a process known as photovoltaic conversion. Photovoltaic cells, which are found in solar panels, absorb the sun’s rays and convert them into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then converted to alternating current (AC) for use in homes and businesses by an inverter device. Batteries can also be used to store any excess energy generated for later use.

The energy collected by your solar power system is converted to electricity, which can be utilised in the home.

Excess solar generated energy that isn’t consumed can be exported back to the electrical grid – and you may qualify for a feed-in tariff payment from this contribution.

NOTE: The former Solar Bonus Scheme feed-in tariff is not available to new customers.

If you live outside South East Queensland, you may be able to access the regional solar feed-in tariff. This is a flat rate tariff available to eligible Ergon Energy Retail customers and Origin Energy customers.

Eligibility

To find out if you’re eligible, contact your electricity distributor:

To be eligible, you have to:

  • operate a solar system with a maximum inverter capacity not exceeding 30 kilowatts
  • consume less than 100 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity a year (the average home uses approximately 4.3MWh a year)
  • be a retail customer of either Ergon Energy Retail or Origin Energy (if you’re connected to the Essential Energy network)
  • be connected to the electricity grid
  • have a network connection agreement with an electricity distributor signalling their approval to connect the system to the electricity grid
  • have only one solar power system receiving the feed-in tariff per premise
  • not be receiving any other tariff (i.e. the 44 cent/kWh feed-in tariff).

Tariff

The Queensland Competition Authority sets this rate each year.

  • For 2022–23, the regional feed-in tariff is 9.3 cents per kilowatt hour.

YES, you will need to tell your electricity provider that you have installed a solar system.

It depends on your individual needs and preferences, however investing in solar in in 2023 can be a worthwhile decision, given the high amount of sunshine available.

There are numerous incentives such as feed-in tariffs, reduced electricity bills and grants for installing solar systems that can help make it more affordable.

Additionally, solar technology is becoming more efficient and accessible all the time, making it an ever more viable option for those looking to reduce their electricity bills.

Queensland residents can reduce the cost of solar power through incentives like the Australian government solar rebate and the available State government rebates.
